The Doherty story

Waterford, Ireland to New York, USA · 1972

My Aunt Brigid Doherty Winters, who came at 16 alone to Old Westbury, Long Island, from Cheekpoint, Co Waterford, to work on the Milburn estate. She sponsored my newly married parents, William Doherty from Cheekpoint and Teresa nee Keane from Ballygunner, in 1972 to Long Island, New York.

I was born in America in 1974. We settled in Glen Cove and Bayville, where our family is active in the AOH and LAOH. My Father worked for Winters Bros Waste System, and my Mother worked for Piping Rock Club with my Aunt Bernadette Keane, who came from Ballygunner in 1979. I attended St Patrick’s School in Glen Cove, graduated from Locust Valley High School in 1992, and was the first in my family to attend college at SUNY Farmingdale.

We still travel to Waterford yearly, where we have a home in Crooke, Passage East. I retired from the police department in November 2023, where I was a 9/11 WTC first responder. I am married to Caroline from Woodford, Galway, and have 1 daughter, Ashling, who graduated from the Ursuline School in New Rochelle, Class of 2026, and is attending Fairfield University.

We are grateful to America for the opportunity and always remember our Irish heritage.

God Bless America
God Save Ireland.
